About the Gardens

Walking into the garden to pick fresh vegetables for dinner, picking fresh flowers for the living room, having a picnic under the trees; these are things we have done most of our lives and never even thought a time might come when we couldn’t. Moving into a retirement home should not be the end of picking vegetables and flowers but instead, should be the beginning of new adventures along with doing the things we have always loved.

With adventures in mind, the Foxglove Community Gardens were created. Lets take a stroll into the gardens.

Our tour starts in the enclosed (deer proof) garden when 20 raised boxes are growing everything from Anemones to Zucchini. Walking past the barn/classroom and green house, the path takes us through another gate to the spring fed pond.  Here we cross over a bridge and enter the “Tranquility Garden” and discover yet another pond and a creek lined with woodland ferns and moss, Rhododendrons and Azaleas and benches placed to take in the quiet view. Continuing on the path we find an enchanting cabin hidden amongst tall pines. The cabin is complete with an electric fireplace where on a cold winter’s day, our residents and their families can enjoy a warming hot cup of tea. Futher on, you will find the “Poet’s Garden”, a very private place where you and your companion can just sit hidden from view, under a canopy of Plum and Crabapple Trees with 50 year old Rhododendrons climbing into the branches. Keep strolling toward “Rose  Cottage”, built in 1929, and you will enter the “Rose Garden”. Here the air is perfumed not only from the ocean spray, but is blended with the delicate perfume of the June roses. Just past the “Rose Garden” the view expands and there before you is the sea. Osbourne Bay sits glistening in the sun with white sails, shore birds, freighters and ferries. Sit a while on the bench which has been placed there just for you, and take in the breathtaking snow caped mountains above Vancouver. Look closely and you’ll spot the “Lyon’s Teeth”. Plan your visit in time to watch the sun setting over the mountains and linger there to watch the raising moon reflecting on the water. Call ahead and we will be glad to cater lunch or even a candle light picnic by the sea.
